Spectrosynthesis, the first LGBTQ exhibition in an art museum in Asia

The Room of The Top of The Stairs by Fu-sheng Ku Fu-sheng Ku (1935-2017) was born in Shanghai. In 1948 he moved to Taiwan with his family. He joined the Fifth Moon Group and became one of the most representing figures of the modern art world in Taiwan. Fu-sheng Ku lived in France and the United States, where he eventually passed away. “My paintings contain my philosophy, my emotions, and all details about my lifestyle”, the artist has said.
Buck of Freedom by Hsi Shih-Pin Born in Taipei in 1977, Hsi Shih-Phi specializes in sculpture and installation art. The structure and appearance of his work reveal a combination of classical anatomy and traditional craftsmanship, mythological imagination, poetry, and scientific engineering. The artist often transforms daily images into elaborate and fantastic forms.
Half-Hao & Half-Yellow by Wen Hsin Born in Taipei in 1988, Wen Hsin uses photography, videos, and installations to question and explore the real image of the body. She questions beauty standards that are imposed by society, media, and the fashion field. In 2013, after a mastectomy, she was in a state of confusion about her own identity. “I could look like a woman defined by society with external symbols: however, when I remove everything that makes me look like a woman, am I a man, then?”, Wen Hsin said. Her artwork Half originates from the deconstruction of gender duality.
Liberty Leading People by Tzeng Yi-Hsin Born in Taipei in 1979 but based in the US, Tzeng Yi-Hsin uses mixed media to create her work. “My work is mainly focused on looking for the shape and the color of human beings’ desire”, the artist declared. Liberty Leading People appropriates French Romantic artist Eugène Delacroix's masterpiece created in 1830. In the original painting, the woman standing high in the middle symbolizes Liberty, waving the national flag of France and leading people to freedom and victory. In Tzeng's photograph, the national flag is replaced with a rainbow flag for marriage equality and of the Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights which demonstrates the LGBTQ community’s pursuit of freedom.

Passion by Jun-Jieh Wang Jun-Jieh Wang was born in 1963 in Taipei. Pioneer of video art in Taiwan, he has displayed his work in prestigious shows such as the Venice Biennale and the Asian Art Triennale. The video is set in an abandoned pier with an astronaut being the outsider observing a few sailors fighting one other for some valuable treasure. Inspired by German film director Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Querelle (1982), Wang explores the concept of passion: the desire that sustains human life.
Olympia imitates Édouard Manet's homonymous masterpiece created in 1865. When Manet painted his painting, the society adored “elegant style”, “the idealized beauty of the human form,” and mythological figures; Manet was severely criticized for depicting the human body in a truthful manner. Thus, “Olympia is a declaration of war. It displays in front of people’s eyes a new approach to observe things as well as a new approach to depict what has been observed.” Tzeng represents Manet’s spirit and creates a different perspective to view Olympia and to reflect upon the predicaments and issues involved in the contemporary LGBTQ equal rights movement.
Heart Sons by Jimmy Ong Born in Singapore (1964), Jimmy Ong’s works are exhibited in Singapore, US, and the Netherlands. He currently travels between Indonesia and US to create his artwork. The artist mainly uses charcoal as a medium by preserving the traces of automatic drawing. Ong’s work is largely inspired by personal experiences; he places an emphasis on gender identity within the context of familial relations. Using his experience of homosexual marriage, the artist also includes subjects such as deconstruction of gender dichotomy and stereotypes in conventional marriages.
Sew Up by Xi Ya Die Born in Shanghai in 1963, Xi Ya Die did not pursue higher education after high school. He learned the traditional Chinese art of paper-cutting from his mother. The artist experienced the Cultural Revolution in China, a period during which homosexuals were persecuted. Many of his artworks show two males with flowers, grass, and traditional symbols.
The Wanted Ones_A Sweet Afterlife by Wang Liang-Yin Born in Yunlin (Taiwan) in 1979, Wang Liang-Yin used acrylic as a medium of artistic creation since her undergraduate years. She is famous for her portrayal of sweets. Using sweets as a visual symbol, the artist evokes the sense of taste in viewers’ memory or imagination, explores the primitive desire induced by sweets, and the complicated relation between thoughts and desires
