Ramon Tulfo (70) is one of the most well-known and respected journalists in the Philippines. He was the first of four children born to his independence-fighter father and Japanese mother. Tulfo currently works with renowned media outlet The Inquirer as a columnist and runs the regular radio channel ‘DWIZ 882 AM’. Inside Tulfo’s office, one will see photos of his work experience and a sigh that says “Ask Ramon Tulfo!”

Tulfo’s radio show acts as a way the poor and disadvantaged groups in the Philippines can directly communicate their hardships. In one day, as many as 30 to 40 petitions are registered radio callers, oftentimes, the problems are issues that are immensely difficult to solve. As Tulfo and his staff listen to the issues, they listen to the best of their ability and then try to think of practical solution. “DWIZ 882 AM’ is a nationwide radio station open for an hour starting 9 in the morning—special correspondent to The Asian Alin Ferrer also runs the radio station with Tulfo. 80% of the complaints are said to be directly solved through the radio station itself, which is one of the main reasons why Tulfo decided to maintain the channel for over 20 years.

There had been news that Tulfo had suggested current President Roderigo Duterte to run for office at the time of campaigns. Tulfo acknowledged to this saying, “As President, Duterte is fighting every day to erase corruption and crimes related to the drug trade and abuse throughout the Philippines. He is the kind of man that when he decides on something, he will see to it the decision is followed through. Our President is a man of integrity. When he was Governor of Davao city, he lived in a house just those that ordinary citizens lived in. He has always led a humble life and is one who is on the side of the common people. Duterte’s strength lies in his way of exemplifying his promises to the people.”

Reporter Ramon Tulfo was born November 22nd, 1946, in Davao city. In his previous birthday celebration (held November 26th, 2016), guests such as former Presidents Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Joseph Estrada, including other prominent government officials, celebrities, and media personnel were in attendance to congratulate Tulfo (more than 200 guests were present). It is said that Tulfo did not invite any of the millionaires. Much of what Tulfo believes in and his values can be seen throughout his writing.
