Protest continues over death of journalist couple in Bangladesh

Bangladesh journalists to march towards PMs office

DHAKA – Journalists community in Bangladesh have  announced  a  fresh spell of  protest program  including  a march  towards Prime  Minister’s  office on  June 26  demanding  arrest  of   the  killers  of  journalist couple  Meherun Rinu  and  Sagar Sarwar.

Both television journalists were murdered in their bedroom in a city apartment on February 11. But police have so far failed to detect the clue or arrest any one in this connection.

Under a pressure of movement by the journalist community,  both the  bodies were exhumed for  a  fresh  test  but  the  report  was  yet  to be  disclosed to the media or  victims family .

The issue of the sensational double murder  caused  an  embarrassment  for  the government  since  the Home Minister    made an  instant commitment  to arrest  the killers  in  48 hours  and  the Prime Minister  accused  the  journalists  of  destroying  the evidences.

According to the program announced in a sit-in program staged in front of the home ministry on Tuesday (May 15), journalist community will submit a memorandum to the speaker of the national parliament on June 5 to press home their demand of arresting the killers of journalist couple Sagar-Runi.
 
Earlier on March 18, the newsmen announced the sit-in program before the home ministry from a grand rally demanding the arrest of the killers of the journalist couple by April 7.
 
Earlier in the day, major journalists’ organizations of the country staged a sit-in program in front of the secretariat demanding arrest of the killers of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi and trial for the earlier killings of newsmen.

The journalists under the banner of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, National Press Club, Dhaka Reporters Unity and Dhaka Union of Journalists took position in front of the gate No. 1 of the secretariat from Tuesday morning to press home their demands.

Earlier, the demonstrating journalists gathered in front of The National Press Club at about 11am and staged a human chain and short rally.

Later, police barred the newsmen  by putting  barbed  wire  fencing   when they set off from the Press Club with a procession towards  Central Secretariat, the  next  door   block  that houses  different  ministries  of  the government. http://rusbank.net/
