Abkhazia asks FIFA to consider Abkhazia’s accession

Georgia's standpoint on South Ossetia, Abkhazia conflict with Russia

De facto Prime Minister Arthur Mikvabia of occupied Abkhazia region in Georgia has sent a letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino and asked for consideration of the possibility of accession of the Abkhazian Football Federation to FIFA, Interpressnews reports.

“We hope that the desire of the Abkhazian Football Federation to become a member of FIFA, which is fully supported by the country’s population, will be accepted by the FIFA Executive Committee. This will help the Republic of Abkhazia in getting recognition of independence from other countries,” – says the letter.

Abkhazia is a breakaway region of Georgia. Five-day war occurred in 2008 between Georgia and Russia over the territory. The region is recognized by Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela and some Pacific island states.
