Presidents of Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia are scheduled to discuss the completion of north-south corridor in an upcoming tripartite meeting, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said on July 12.

He made the remarks in a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, IRNA reports.

Mammadyarov said that the north-south corridor is of special significance to the region.

He said that a specific date for the meeting of the three presidents will be decided in August.

The completion of north-south corridor will link railways of Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia with the aim of promoting transit from South East Asia to Northern Europe and vice versa.

Based on the planning, some five million tons of goods will be transported from the corridor each year in the first phase and the figure is expected to more than double in the next phases.
