Renoir: Images of Women

1Pierre Auguste Renoir (born February 25, 1841, Limoges, France—died December 3, 1919, Cagnes) French painter originally associated with the Impressionist movement. Renoir was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. He was one of the central figures of the impressionist movement, which is a French art movement of the second half of the nineteenth century whose members sought in their works to represent the first impression of an object upon the viewer). His work is characterized by a richness of feeling and warmth of response to the world and to the people in it.

2His early works were typically Impressionist snapshots of real life, full of sparkling colour and light. By the mid-1880s, however, he had broken with the movement to apply a more disciplined, formal technique to portraits and figure paintings, particularly of women. Renoir was so passionate about painting that he even continued when he was old and suffering from severe arthritis. He even painted with the brush tied to his wrists.

In celebration of 130 years of Korean-French diplomatic ties and the 70th anniversary of the Korean newspaper, the Kyunghyang Shinmun, the Seoul Museum of Art will be hosting a special exhibition of works by the French Impressionist, Pierre-Auguste Renoir. This exhibition, which is titled “Images of Women”, will be on display until March 26th, 2017.

Renoir thought art should portray the pleasant and beauty of life, and he enjoyed focusing his artwork on women. So, the theme of this exhibition is women. The collection will be categorized in 4 sections: paintings of children, women in families, Renoir’s partners and lastly, nude paintings. Hopefully you will not miss this amazing exhibition!
