Japan on 10 August recalled its ambassador in Seoul over a visit by the South Korean President to the set of disputed islets, Tokyo’s Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said. ‘In a show of protest, I’ve decided to have Ambassador to South Korea [Masatoshi] Muto return to Japan temporarily,’ the minister told a news conference. The government also summoned South Korean Ambassador Shin Kak Soo to lodge a protest over the president’s trip to the islet group, called Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea. The islets are controlled by Seoul but also claimed by Tokyo. Meanwhile, Lee reportedly left the islets after landing earlier in the afternoon. Before his arrival, Tokyo had strongly urged Seoul to cancel the trip. EPA/YNA SOUTH KOREA OUT
