World’s first quadruple limb transplant operation over in Turkey

The world’s first quadruple limb transplant operation came to an end on Saturday at Hacettepe University in Turkey’s capital Ankara, the country’s semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

The operation, which began on Friday morning, transplanted two arms and two legs of a deceased donor to a patient, Dr. Murat Tuncer was quoted as saying.

“The quadruple limb transplant is over and the patient is given a blood and plasma transfusion to help him overcome the next 24 hours,” Dr. Murat Tuncer said, adding that the quadruple limb transplant at the Ankara hospital follows other such major transplants in Turkey, with a successful full face transplant at the Mediterranean University Hospital last month.

Also in January this year, the world’s first triple limb transplant trial with two arms and a leg failed at the Mediterranean University Hospital in Turkey as the doctors had to remove the leg due to tissue incompatibility, said the report. <Xinhua>
