64 Chinese Kids Suffer From Lead Poisoning

Sixty-four children have been confirmed to be suffering from lead poisoning in south China’s Guangdong province, local authorities said Friday.

Of the 103 residents of Dongtang township of Renhua county who have had their blood tested, 64 children have been diagnosed with elevated blood lead levels, according to the Shaoguan city government, which administers Renhua county.

Local authorities said they have organized medical treatment for the sickened children and are monitoring emissions coming from local businesses to find a possible source of contamination. <Photo: Xinhua/Li Zuomiao>
